AWS Free Tier Guide: What Is Included, Limits, Pricing Traps, and Best Practices
The AWS Free Tier is no longer just about running a tiny EC2 instance for 12 months. AWS now combines Always Free allowances, 12-month offers, short-term trials, and, for new accounts created after July 15, 2025, a credit-based onboarding model with up to USD 200 in credits. That is useful. It is also easy to misunderstand.
If you are using AWS for certification practice, a proof of concept, or team training, treat the Free Tier as a controlled lab environment, not a blank check. The difference matters.

What Is the AWS Free Tier?
The AWS Free Tier is a set of usage-based offers that lets you try selected AWS services at low or zero cost within published limits. AWS groups these offers into three categories:
- Always Free: Monthly allowances that continue as long as the account stays active.
- 12 months free: Usage allowances available during the first 12 months after account creation.
- Short-term trials: Limited trials, often 30 to 60 days, that start when you activate a service.
AWS documentation states that new accounts can access free benefits across more than 80 services, and that more than 30 services include Always Free monthly limits. The exact list shifts, so check before you build.
The 2025 AWS Free Tier Change: Free Plan, Paid Plan, and Credits
For accounts created after July 15, 2025, AWS introduced a plan choice during sign-up. You pick either a Free account plan or a Paid account plan.

Compute: EC2, Lambda, and Containers
Amazon EC2 has historically included 750 hours per month of eligible micro instances during the first 12 months. That is enough to run one eligible instance continuously for a month, but not two instances all month. This is where beginners miscalculate.
AWS Lambda is part of Always Free usage. Commonly cited limits include 1 million requests per month and 400,000 GB-seconds of compute time per month. For small event-driven apps, that is generous.
Container services such as AWS Fargate may carry specific trials or limited offers. Confirm the current terms before building around them.
Storage: S3 and EBS
Amazon S3 Free Tier usage has commonly included 5 GB of standard storage, 20,000 GET requests, and 2,000 PUT requests per month for new accounts. Amazon EBS Free Tier examples have included 30 GB of general purpose or magnetic storage, with limited I/O and snapshot storage. Watch the volume size during EC2 launch. The console makes it too easy to add extra volumes and forget them.
Databases: RDS and DynamoDB
Amazon RDS has historically included 750 hours per month of eligible Single-AZ micro DB instances for engines such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, MariaDB, SQL Server Express, and Oracle BYOL. Typical Free Tier examples also include 20 GB of database storage and 20 GB of backup storage.
Amazon DynamoDB is one of the better Always Free services for learning. AWS commonly cites 25 GB of storage plus 25 read capacity units and 25 write capacity units, which is enough free throughput to handle roughly 200 million requests per month within defined limits.
Networking and Content Delivery
Amazon CloudFront Free Tier examples often include 1 TB of data transfer out and 10 million HTTP or HTTPS requests per month under the Always Free allowance. That sounds large until you put a video file behind it.
Data transfer is the trap hiding in plain sight. Outbound internet traffic, cross-region traffic, NAT gateways, and some load balancer usage can create charges even when your compute instance itself is within Free Tier.
AWS Free Tier Limits You Must Track

- Account age: 12-month offers expire exactly one year after sign-up completion.
- Monthly reset: Always Free limits reset each month, but overages are billed.
- Trial clock: Short-term trials start when you activate the service, not when you first use it seriously.
- Region: Availability and eligible instance types can differ by AWS Region.
- Plan type: A Free account plan and a Paid account plan behave differently for billing.
- Eligible services: If a service is not covered, it can bill from the first unit of usage.
Common AWS Pricing Traps
Running More Than One Micro Instance
750 EC2 hours is not unlimited compute. One instance running for about 31 days consumes the allowance. Two instances running all month consume about 1,500 hours. Simple math, painful bill.
NAT Gateways in Lab VPCs
To be blunt, NAT gateways are a bad default for most Free Tier labs. In us-east-1, NAT Gateway pricing has been about USD 0.045 per hour plus data processing charges, and it is not part of the classic EC2 Free Tier. I have seen training accounts where the EC2 instance was free, but the forgotten NAT gateway cost more than everything else combined.
RDS Backups and Idle Databases
Stopping an EC2 instance is common. Stopping or deleting RDS resources is easier to forget. Automated backups, snapshots, extra storage, and Multi-AZ choices can push you outside free allowances. For practice labs, use Single-AZ and delete the database when you finish unless you genuinely need it.
Public Traffic and Downloads
A static S3 website used by five classmates is one thing. A public demo that lands on social media is another. Data transfer out can become billable fast. Put limits around demos.
Trials That Expire Quietly
Short-term trials for services such as Amazon Redshift, Lightsail, or collaboration tools are useful, but they run on a clock. When the trial ends, resources left running can generate charges on a Paid plan.
Best Practices for Using the AWS Free Tier Safely
Set Budgets on Day One
Create an AWS Budget right after account setup. Use a low threshold such as USD 5 or USD 10, and enable billing alerts. AWS Budgets and Cost Explorer exist to give you visibility into spending and Free Tier usage before a bill surprises you.
Tag Everything
Use tags such as Project=training, Owner=yourname, and DeleteAfter=2026-02-15. Tags make cost review easier when you come back to an account after a weekend and wonder what is still running.
Use a Sandbox Account
Do not mix production workloads with Free Tier experiments. Create a separate AWS account for labs, certification study, and prototypes. Enterprises should use AWS Organizations and service control policies to restrict expensive services in sandbox accounts.
Automate Shutdown
Use Amazon EventBridge Scheduler, Lambda, or a simple script to stop EC2 and RDS resources after office hours. For a learner, manual cleanup is fine at first. For a team, automation is non-negotiable.
Prefer Serverless for Small Prototypes
For many learning projects, Lambda, API Gateway, DynamoDB, and S3 are safer than a traditional EC2 plus RDS stack. The Always Free allowances fit small event-driven workloads well. The trade-off: you need to understand IAM permissions, cold starts, and service quotas.
Review Free Tier Usage Weekly
Open the Billing and Cost Management console. Check Free Tier usage alerts, Cost Explorer, running EC2 instances, unattached EBS volumes, load balancers, RDS snapshots, and Elastic IP addresses. Unattached does not always mean free.
How to Use the AWS Free Tier for Certification Practice
The AWS Free Tier is excellent for hands-on labs if you keep the scope tight. Build small projects that map to real cloud skills:
- Launch an eligible EC2 micro instance and connect with SSH.
- Create an S3 bucket, apply bucket policies, and test object permissions.
- Deploy a Lambda function that writes to DynamoDB.
- Create a CloudFront distribution for a static website.
- Configure CloudWatch alarms and AWS Budgets.
